Listening to music is very dangerous

Almost all of us loves music and connect with it but we need to watch out since science has proven that music severely affect our brains.

Time perception

To understand why exactly music makes it seem like less time has passed think of the human brain as a lion eating a bag of money.

It doesn’t matter what the zookeepers distract it with.

brain-and-music

All that matters is that they give another zookeeper the chance to sneak up and retrieve the money while the lion is busy deciding which one of them to eat.

Similarly when your brain is distracted by music you’ll be less likely to notice things around you and this includes time.

Our brains have limited input capacity and when something else is using up that capacity we’re less likely to think.

The tricky is that it works the opposite way, too.

In some situations listening to music can actually expand perceived time.

Drinking

Did you ever wake up in a stranger bed and wonder how your dress got replaced by a stranger shirt?

Now you have something to blame it on besides your bad childhood habits: music.

In a study held by the University of Champagne, different types of music playing in the background caused drinkers to change how they’d described the drinks they already had.

Laid back music led people to rate drinks as mellow and upbeat music resulted in more people calling their drinks refreshing.

Fear

There is a reason that horror films scare the crap out of us and it’s not just the creepy settings and the sudden reveal of the zombie right behind you.

It’s the music.

And sometimes the Steven Seagal.

There are certain sounds that we associate with death because they trigger evolutionary fear.

Screams of fear in almost any animal are made up of what scientists have dubbed discordant noises and any noise that makes you feel very unpleasant falls into this category.

Next time you’re getting freaked out by a movie remember that muting it is a better decision than looking away.

Communication

Studying music gives you an advantage when it comes to perceiving the emotions of others.

People who play instruments can detect subtle emotional changes in others voice tone.

Also, the fact that they studied music makes them better able to tune out background noise so they can pay attention to what you are saying even at loud places.

People who have studied music have brains wired differently and this rewiring makes them better able to express emotions they are feeling and more able to understand the emotions others express.

This may explain why Adam Levine is so afraid of announcing he is gay.

Benefits of having a mental disorder

Even though medicine evolves a lot we don’t really have an answer on why human brains go wrong the way they do.

Let me show you how what we call a disorder can be an advantage.

Obsessive compulsive disorder

Humanity might have been eaten by horror wolves a long time ago if it wasn’t for OCD.

OCD is a psychological immune system.

This disorder carries the stigma of being seen as washing your hands 10 times when you get home or organizing your clothes by color like a neurotic but it has aseptic benefits for humanity.

mental-health

This people hold cleaning rituals that can be the difference between life and death.

An OCD sufferer acts like he’ll die if he doesn’t get every little thing in his immediate surroundings exactly right and in some cases that is absolutely true.

It is thought that the condition originated as an evolutionary warning system that kept our whole species alive by making certain early humans constantly worried about everyday stuff.

People who have OCD serve as a meaning to get us to stay away from icky things that pose a potential danger in the form of bacteria and parasites.

Attention deficit

Let’s use the best example: me.

Attention deficit make me write articles, make paintings, read books and learn new languages, just because I easily got bored.

Some people think that attention deficit is a disease but it only is a genetic condition.

A condition that has historically helped humanity.

As specie we need a wide variety of skills to survive.

We had to be a little bit of everything to be successful so is very useful to have a brain that likes to hop from task to task.

Great advancements happened because capable people got bored with the status quo.

We run the world!

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is one of those disorders that make you wonder just who the hell designed the human brain.

It’s characterized by an inability to read despite normal intelligence.

The brain jumbling up characters like one of those captcha text boxes.

Dyslexia is also a symptom of a brain superpower.

Over 40 percent of successful people describe themselves as dyslexic, from Albert Einstein to Steven Spielberg have struggled with the condition.

People with dyslexia tend to be highly creative, artistic, intelligent and great at solving multidimensional problems.

Things may become tricky when it comes time to write the answer down.

Internet tears people apart

The Internet has given us access to remote people and news from all around the globe.

However, the Internet is also opposing neighbor against neighbor in new and innovative ways that only technology could have made possible.

You only talk to people you agree with

The better way you can improve as a person is by making mistakes and receiving corrections from other people.

Receive bad feedback from others is not nice but is the only way we can learn how to be better.

If you surround with ‘yes men’ people you will get disconnected from reality and excluded yourself from creating new social connections.

So far the internet is building that bubble of ‘yes men’ people around you and is not a conspiracy theory, is just how computer algorithms works.

Facebook for example, you think it gave you all of your friend’s updates in order?

Of course not, by default it filters the updates according to your previous preferences.

social-world

And that’s exactly why wrong information can circulate in a bubble where everybody agrees with it; because the ones who know the truth have been deliberately filtered out.

Misinformation

Last year I saw on Reddit the following headline ‘Russia is massing troops on Iran’s northern border ready to start a war if US attacks Iran’.

The source was BusinessInsider.com, a very respectable page which was pulling the article from World Net Daily where the story cites unnamed sources.

So let’s follow the path. Front page of a huge news portal -> popular website -> crazy site -> imagination of a random guy.

And by the way, Russia doesn’t border Iran.

We didn’t even pay attention to it because what we spend all of our time doing is browsing, fast browsing information without stop and dig into the details.

Discussion formats

As online forums become more populated, for example, customers who are more positive and less involved tend to stick to the sidelines, while customers who are more involved and more critical take their place.

Online feedback tends to be either from people who are being negative or from people who are positive and see that other people are trashing the thing they’re positive about.

Now they have to speak up, just to try to negate the negativity.

One way or the other, the loudest, most negative people dictate the discussion.

You’ve probably also seen this phenomenon in every single political discussion that has ever taken place online.

Internet users versus everyone else

I wrote this complete article talking about different opinions you find on the internet, ignoring the fact that the Internet is not the world.

The digital gap is the breach between internet users and non-internet users.

You may think of the consequences of this as just simply oddity in social gatherings but in global terms, it’s a massive problem.

The differences between an internet user life and a non-internet user life are huge and get bigger every single day.

Internet use rewires our brains.

So if the internet is presenting us with the stories and opinions we care about, and internet is only available to the richest third of us, then no matter how open-minded you are, the pure fact that you’re reading this, means you’re already living in a bubble.

Healthy food kills brain cells

Junk food contains the nutrients that the brain thrives.

With the actual trend of healthy eating humans are also increasing the appearance of depression, dementia, ADHD, chronic headaches, and Alzheimer.

If you remove junk food from your intake you are most likely to have one of those disorders.

The less fruits and vegetables a person eats, the more protected is for problems that plague our brains and hearts.

By avoiding healthy food we not only protect our most valuable organ, but also undo years of damage.

Fried chicken, chocolate cake and ice cream promotes neurogenesis, the birth of new brain cells, and communication between neurons, to the degree that studies have shown that higher levels of cholesterol ingestion correlates to more robust cognitive proficiency.

Between year 2001 and 2010 the healthy eaten trend got viral and during that same time period deaths from Alzheimer’s increased 68 percent.

That’s exactly how what we eat affects the health of our brain.

Mayo Clinic researchers showed that individuals eating healthy had a remarkable 98% increased risk for developing dementia as contrasted to those whose diets contained snacks and fast food.

In addition, vegetables and fruits have an incredibly high glycemic index and this poses an equally powerful threat to brain health.

Having the highest levels of cookies and ice cream consumption was actually found to be associated with an incredible 84% increase in brain activity.

Protein is a fundamental building block for brain cells and one of the richest sources of saturated fat in nature is peanut butter.

Mayo studies also found that a high fat diet appears to alter the brain biochemistry to radically increase intelligence levels.

They say this is due to the increased levels of various monoamines namely dopamine in the striatum, noradrenalin in the hypothalamus and serotonin in the amygdala and frontal cortex.

Candy, cookies and ice cream are really the key to all longevity and intelligence.

They’re responsible for the behavioral changes that manifest and also the brain changes that look like genius levels of intelligence.

When we eat them we immediately feel the synapses sparking up in our brains and our cognition enhanced to a very high level.

And that is because the brain is sparking up synapses and making new neural connections every time you indulge in fatty sugary processed junk food.

Eating Twix, M&Ms, Doritos, Snickers and Skittles will make you into a walking genius rivaling brain boxes like Einstein and Stephen Hawking.
